THE VIEW FROM MY WORLD

So the big day will be arriving this Saturday as the long awaited "Motu Propio" will come out and I guess will change the way that Catholics will celebrate the Mass. Of course it's been said that the Novo Ordo Mass in which is presently celebrated throughout the Latin Rite will still be the norm but the question is, how free will priests be to celebrate the Tridentine Mass? I know myself that if I were to celebrate the old rite I would have to have undergo some training in the old rite and polish up on some of my Latin vocabulary.

There has been much talk for it and against it. Those that are for it will say there was such a beauty and a mystery to the old rite and those that are against it will say but we you couldn't understand what was going on and it seemed like the Mass was for the priest and not the faithful. Well, one of my Franciscan brothers reminded me that you really can't say that there was something wrong with the rite that was used for about 400 years. Yes. there is a beauty to the old rite and I do love Gregorian Chant (which I did have at my Ordination Mass). I believe that Pope Benedict is tackling this issue because he is a reconciling pope. His a pope that wants to bring us together and it should interesting to see what happens after Saturday. Until then polish up on those "et cum spiritu tuo's."

I'm actually kinda excited about this, too. I've never been to a Tridentine Mass, but I think it would be really interesting and really... well... really Catholic. I definately like the Mass being in the vernacular because I think it's good to understand what's going on and be able to participate more both physically and spiritually. But there's something beautiful about the idea of a Mass that's the exact same anywhere in the world and throughout time. It just seems so unifying and definitely puts the catholic in Catholic. I hope that bishops take advantage of this and don't just ignore it. And this proves that Saturday's the perfect day, too. (Get it, 07/07/07? The perfect day? I crack myself up).
